No! If you got an response from someone claiming to be the Craigslist CEO for an ad you posted on craigslist do not believe it! The name of the CEO is actually Jim Buckmaster. Be careful, though, as scammers can still change their Contact Name and visible email address.
Here is the email I got from a Gerald Darr who was using the email chingi797979mu@hotmail.com
Attention Craigslist User,
My name is Gerald Darr, Chief executive officer of Craigslist. We have recently partnered up with The apple company for a one-time promotional event today, we are giving away free Apple iPads to randomly selected folks who have published an ad on C-list. You have been chosen as one of our latest winners for today. We randomly choose numbers to match up with ads on Cl and your ad matched with our latest drawing.
We have partnered up with Apple to advertise their most popular product yet, the Apple iPad. Once again, we are operating this campaign for one-day only. All you need to do is CLICK HERE to go to our website made for this promotion and enter your email to get yours for free. Simply make sure you enter your email so we can locate our records to ensure that we have reserved one for you. That is it!
Congratulations on winning a free Apple iPad (valued at $800). In case you have any question or concerns, feel free to email me back. However, you need to claim your free iPad first to ensure one will be set-aside for you before the deadline ends. We do understand that you may well not receive this email until after the deadline, but, we suggest you check out the website and enter your email to see if we still have got yours on hold, which we often-times do because others have not claimed theirs in time.
Gerald Darr
CEO, Craigslist
Edited on 1/5/11:
Thanks everyone for reporting your information in the comments. Here is the information gathered.
Names used by these scammers:
Gerald Darr
Cliff Halliday – reported by Tiffny
Curtis Timothy – reported by ari
Curtis Smith – reported by Janet
Herman Fischer – reported on the consumerist
Mark Osborn – reported on akronwebdevelopment
He’s a spammer that works at a tech firm in Arizona!- He replied to a post I had on CL and I spent an hour tracking him down- I called him and gave him a piece of my mind!
His direct dial number is xxx-xxx-xxxx
If he denies it, then tell him he works at a technology company and has the ability to track down who ever is (supposedly) using his name, bnut I think its really him.
Thanks Steve. It really makes me sad that scammers scour Craigslist and make users fearful of using such a great free service.
I’ve been checking out the internet and have found other names being used for the same scam:
http://consumerist.com/2010/11/no-the-craigslist-ceo-is-not-sending-you-a-free-ipad.html – Herman Fischer
http://akronwebdevelopment.wordpress.com/2010/12/13/craigslist-ceo-ipad-spam-scam/ – Mark Osborn
THanks for the direct phone number.. i too called him and left him a real nice message. It makes me insane with anger that people can do this kind stuff to others. What a garbage way to make a living…
thank u for this information, i just got an email from a post i made on craigslist today saying all the same things except the CEO name is Cliff Halliday, what a BS! first i got a message asking if my post was a con, i replied back no and thats the second message i got, then i searched online to see if his was a scam and i found your blog so how do u stop this spammers?very annoying…
yeah he asked me first “do you have criminal records?” wonder why. I said no and he shot me the hoax email using the name Curtis Timothy.
Matt – I know how you feel. It is terrible that there are users trying to take advantage of a great free service like Craigslist.
Tiffny – One thing you can do is filter out messages from your email inbox that have the keywords “free ipad”. It is safe to say that free iPads are too good to be true. We can also try making craigslist aware of these types of emails and they can block certain IP’s from emailing the anonymous email addresses.
Ari – Sorry that is happening to you. We’ll all have to be extra careful when replying to users from Craigslist.
TIFFNY: Yes, replies from “Cliff Halliday” on CL is a scam. I experience a similar situation.

Attention Craigslist User,

Thanks Janet. Wow, it seems like they are using many different names.
I’ll update this post with a list of names they are using. For easy reference.
Tracking names means nothing. Really.
The scammers that send these scammer messages out can create 5 false email addresses in the time it takes you to read their spam.
If you do your due dilligence, and trace down their sending (originating) IP address tied to yahoo, hotmail or whatever webmail host they used, most of the senders will originate in the UK or Nigeria. Just because the senders name seems reasonably valid shouldn’t be a reason for you to track down someone with that same name and give them a piece of your mind.
Anyone can put a person’s name into google and start hunting down the results. Steve, you most likely took the first result from google, namely the guy’s profile from Linked In, and went after him. If the guy that Steve R identified by telephone number is in any way NOT the person who originated the spam, then the person at the other end of that phone number who is receiving harassment calls should be talking to an attorney about a future defamation case due to the public statement here that makes the specific claim of Gerald Darr, and his direct phone number, expressly stated by Steve R. to be factual, that may give an individual at that phone number a negative image.
I would suggest that the Blog owner take the claims off the site before Gerald Darr looks at you as an accessory to this claim.
Regards,
TFG
Thanks TFG. That makes a lot of sense. I’ll block the phone number used for this user.
Another email Id that Gerald Darr uses is StrumpfTrain@hotmail.com. He is a scammer. You will see a spelling mistake in the emails he sends. Don’t respond to him.
I just experienced this loveliness as well… messages from “Gerald Darr” expressing interest and then providing a suspicious link to see if my item is the same as what he has previously purchased. I replied that I wasn’t going to open the link and asked how much money he makes from the scam… no response.
Out of curiosity I opened the page on my Linux machine and it took me to a website supposedly displaying a video that the scammer wanted me to watch but I had to install a toolbar first. I didn’t install the toolbar to see what happens next.
The IP addresses from which the scam messages were sent include:
115.51.242.112
222.63.117.75
Both originate in China. I lack the geographic proximity or internet prowess to do anything more than report the information here for others to view, so now I’m simply going to carry on with my day.
Hi. I just got one of these e-mails myself for a service ad I placed on craigslist for my company, LSDesigning. The clue to me to research it was that I put this ad under my personal e-mail but listed in the ad the business e-mail. I was told in my e-mail that it was Jim Buckmaster, CEO of Craigslist, and numbers of post were randomly selected. Therefore, I knew right away if it was the number selected, it would have delivered the message to my personal e-mail not the business one. As you can guess, I received the e-mail at the business address. So, you can add Jim Buckmaster to the list of names the spammer is using. Thought you might like to know.
Stacy
I got that email from Curtis Timothy
Even though I knew it was a scam, a part of me wanted to believe it because I want an iPad. =0]
Even though it was obviously a scam, a part of me wanted to believe it because I want an iPad. =0]
Yes I too received the same email from Curtis Timothy. To me, it is obviously a scam and just ignored it. However, I am curious, what does the scammer want the email recipient to do that results in a profit for them? I receive so much of this type garbage email that I never really thought about it. Thanks. Jeff
@Steve R
I just received one from Timothy Curtis. As if the CEO from craigslist would use a hotmail account for their email. Get real. I don’t know how to track these guys down but I would love to find them just so I could walk up to them and punch them in the face. Souless creatures trying to make a fast buck off the general public. They make me both furious and want to puke at the same time. Heaven help them if I ever find one of these pimple-faced, snot nose little bastards.
Thank you for your time and have a nice day,
Larry
I got hit too. The name was Curtis Smith….same hype about ipad. What do we do? Is this identity theft?

For all who are replying back to this ahole what most likely you are doing is giving them a valid email address to add to a mailing list to sell to other aholes. Anytime you get these types of mailings you should just delete it.
Attention Craigslist User,
I’m Jim Buckmaster, CEO of Craigslist. Last month we formed a new partnership with Apple Inc. for a special limited time promotional event: we are giving away free Apple iPads to randomly picked Craigslist users. We select a winner by picking a random Craigslist post and declaring poster as that day’s iPad winner. Your craigslist post “Preschool Teacher Needed (Fort Lauderdale)” was selected as today’s winner. Congrats!!! You just won a free Apple iPad currently worth $850. We have created a special website to make it easy for each winner to get their iPad. To get your free iPad please complete a few simple steps HERE
We will ship your iPad free of charge in 1-3 business days. One of our recent winners thought this was a scam so I want to personally confirm that this is a legit offer. In fact you are welcome to reply back to this email and contact me directly with any questions you might have. Before contacting me I strongly suggest you complete the steps HERE to get your free iPad so that one is reserved for you before we run out.

E-mail scammers have a way to hide their e-mail and have it show up as another address, they do with with the URL links as well, it will show one and actually take you to another. It’s not legit. Think about it.

the e-mail address was jungplat@hotmail.com and said he was Jim Buckmaster CEO of Craigslist.
I to received an e-mail and was trying to find out more about it because I thought it was saspious, and found this site, so I guess it has been reported, Thanks for everone posting this scam it gives everyone heads up.
i also got an email for the “CEO” of CL but this time he is using the name Jim Galas.
Email: merlesnca@hotmail.com
i have reported it but it probably wouldn’t do any good. I just hope no one actually falls for it.
Here’s what bothers me about this. I selected “anonymize” my e-mail address yet, this phishing e-mail was sent _directly_ to my account e-mail address. I’m wondering if CL has been flat out hacked?
I received the same from someone named Jim Spurling claiming to be the CEO of Craigslist (the address is from hattiewna@hotmail.com):

Yep, I think it’s definitely a fraud. I received one from “Jim Spurling” on about 8/19/2011, and before that from another “Jim” whose last name I forget. Both offering a free tablet.
I wrote to Craigslist about the earlier 1, but never received a reply. Didn’t really expect one.
I’m only offering to write this because I hate to see some poor newby get suckered. TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, CRAIGSLIST DOES NOT GIVE AWAY *ANYTHING* FREE, FOR ANY REASON. Their Craigslist service is free, that should be enough for anyone.

This is the email I got, also from Jim Spurling. I emailed craigslist also. Makes me so mad
Jim Spurling is the name that the person who claimed Craigs List and Apple were united on the email that showed up as SPAM in my Yahoo account. By the way, I had not used Craig’s list for years until recently while looking for an apartment on low income. Most of the responses I got were OFF TOPIC. I recieved a lot of suggestions for jobs to improve my income or responses from apartment management companies that did not read low income. One person claimed they needed an assistant to REMAIL things for them; bet their a lawbreaker!
