Is console gaming back? I haven’t really played hardcore on console for the past 3 years. I played Skyrim here and there, finished Arkham Asylum, started GTAV, but it was all pretty casual. I’m watching the MS E3 Press Conference and off the top of my head, I’m pretty excited to see Gears of War 4, HoloLens, and Halo 4.
Sam and I have been huge fans of the Halo series. It’s actually the first “hardcore” game I had her play when we first started dating. I remember the days she started running around and aiming her gun at the sky, not really sure how to move her head yet. Then, she grew into this hardcore multiplayer, demanding SWAT no shields BR every time.
It looks like for Halo 5, they are taking a squad based shooter approach. From the footage, you are one of 4 Spartans trying to find out what happened to Master Chief. According the the Podcast that Microsoft has been producing, it sounds like MC has gone Rogue and in the campaign you are trying to find out what has happened to him.
The multiplayer modes seem to have your standard squad vs squad matchups and will include a SWAT-like “Breakout” mode which will feature a 1 life competitive mode that encourages communication between players.
The next cool thing they showed that caught my eye was the Hololens with Minecraft. I don’t play Minecraft, but what they were doing was blowing my mind. How much of it was smoke and mirrors? I don’t know. But, if they can really pull this off at home, I’d really like the chance to try it.
And finally, they ended the game with a preview to Gears of War 4. It was a quick demo bringing you back into the universe as a new character named JD. The footage showed what seems like 2 characters working together instead of a squad of 4. The enemies were bigger and scarier than before.
God of War: Collection just came in the mail. Great, I need to find time to play this, now.
Ugh… so many video games, so little time.
This video is pretty dated, but if MS can really come through with all the features in this video, Project Natal is going to be freaking awesome. I’m pretty late in noticing, since the first and last time I paid any attention was when they were debuting it on Jimmy Fallon.
This is a really cool machinima using Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Man, that game is twisted at some parts. I swear, I didn’t shoot anyone at the airport! Check the security tapes!
Final Fantasy XIII arrived at my house. I’m not sure if I’ll have time to play it yet, though. I’ve been overhearing people saying that it’s going to take ~60 hours to beat and that the story is far too linear for a modern day RPG.
It’s funny that I don’t mind this being linear. I find that sometimes, you just want to pick up a game and play through the story, and not have to decide. Don’t get me wrong, open world and open story games (ala Mass Effect 2) are some of my favorites, but sometimes, the world can be too open and the story never seems to finish (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion). The game should be designed with the gamer in mind, or else we’re going to have a lot of people that only going to go through 60-70% of the game and never finish.
That is what I loved about Mass Effect 2, the design team actually took the time to learn from their fan feedback in the forums. That’s why you have such things as 40 minutes missions, interesting characters, and easy pick up and put down game play.
Well, looks like I’m going to be in a cave for a while.
It sounds like Justin over at Joystiq loved the third installment of God of War, even though he wasn’t as impressed with the first two. It makes me wonder whether better graphics makes a game these days. At first he talks about how it’s God of War HD, so, I’m getting the feeling that the game play is the same, except some nice upgrades to the visual department. Doesn’t sound too compelling to me since I never finished the first one and never bought the second one.
All I remember of the first one, was some crazy special effects and my roommates wanting to only play the dirty parts of the game. Unless there’s some groundbreaking changes to video games, this looks like I’ll have to pass.
